Asparagus belongs to the Asparagaceae family closely related to Liliaceae plants which also include onions and garlic. As with onions, asparagus is low in calories -100 grams of fresh spears contains 20 calories but 2.1 g of roughage. Fresh asparagus spears are a good source of anti-oxidants such as lutein, zea-xanthin, carotenes, and cryptoxanthins and a rich sources of folates. The shoots are rich in vitamin A, vitamin B-complex group of vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), and pantothenic acid, vitamin-C, vitamin-E and vitamin and a natural source of minerals, copper and iron.
